The Dream Begins
We are a mother daughter team based in South Australia with a passion for dogs and disability support.
Growing up, my mum bred and raised Maltese Terriers and her passion for breeding spectacular dogs for animal companionship was passed to me. Overall physical and mental health in the dogs we produced was always important to us, and our dogs were always raised as a part of our family. We were always proud of the love and care we showed to our dogs and despised the way unethical kennels of that time would house and treat their dogs.
After the birth of my own 3 daughters, our family was looking for a dog that would be suitable for both my husband, who is a chronic asthmatic, and our eldest daughter, who suffers with Sensory Processing Disorder. After some research and recommendations of a Labradoodle we found a breeder near us who accepted our application. We found ourselves meeting and eventually taking home our beautiful Labradoodle – Journey. The breeder mentioned that she reminded her of an Australian Cobberdog to which I replied, “What is that?” Needless to say, I went home and ‘Googled’ exactly what it was, and thus began my education on this incredible breed!
After what I know now, I realise we ‘lucked out’ with Journey’s temperament. Though she is not in any way an Australian Cobberdog, she is calm and centred and one of the most love-able dogs I know! However, as she grew, and we were introduced to other Labradoodles or Oodles of some description, I quickly realised that there was no consistency with coat, temperament or conformation. Sadly, many owners I met would describe ongoing veterinary costs for their puppy in the form of treating an inheritable disease or as a result of poor conformation.
My research quickly turned to desire when I learned more breeders were needed to continue the development of this breed and help them to become more widely known. I jumped at the idea of becoming a breeder of a dog that has been selectively bred over countless generations, with lineage painstakingly chosen for temperament and over-all health.
Meanwhile, my mum, having worked in disability for the past decade, had seen first-hand how animal therapy can change lives for the better. We’d often chatted about our breeding ventures over the years and how wonderful it would be to breed dogs appropriate for all kinds of disability and therapeutic care, and when I broached the idea of the Cobberdog with her, she was as excited as I!
As an MDBA registered breeder, our dogs have been raised in our home and are comprehensively health screened through DNA profiling with a core belief that a healthy dog means a healthy body and mind!
As one of the first breeders in South Australia, we hope to bring this wonderful dog into the homes and hearts of our fellow Australians and through the World. We hope to produce dogs with both therapy temperament, and the exceptional assistance temperament and are excited to begin changing lives!
